How to stick to one desktop?

Hi,

VMware fusion opens on another monitor when I use an external display. Is there a way to avoid this? Also, when I switch to a different application my Linux VM is invisible. I would like to see it instead of the desktop. I remember that this was the behavior of earlier releases of fusion/MacOS. Is there a way to restore this?
