You may be right that in the case of a modification the referenced vApp is the one before modification (I was confused with the case of a new vApp creation where you have access to the shell of the new vApp). If the information is not in the blocking task, task it may be in the adminEvent object. You can get these using the query service. Note that I did not check it. This is just an idea.
