There is also VirtualBox. It's free and on par with VMware Workstation in terms of functionality. Runs on all platforms and is compatible with VMware's vmdk files.

At some point, someone created a second VMDK for that VM and wrote a bunch of data to it. They might have later removed it from the VM without deleting hte file (which is the default option)....
